For over 70 years, Hofsas House Hotel in Carmel-by-the-sea has delighted their guests with its whimsical Bavarian-inspired style and famous family hospitality. Whether you are staying for the night or an extended vacation with the family, you will find plenty to entertain yourself with Hofsas House Hotel amenities and their fabulous location. Only three blocks north of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s famous Ocean Ave and built into a hill with commanding views of the Pacific ocean, you can easily stroll downtown or watch the sunset from your balcony while sipping a glass of local wine or morning coffee.
Starting out as just a couple of cottages, over the years Hofsas House Hotel has grown to 38 unique rooms, with no two rooms decorated the same. Dutch doors welcome every guest to their spacious rooms with “cable television, telephones with voice mail, coffee makers, hair dryers and private bathrooms with such amenities as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and a vanity kit” awaiting you inside. Many of the rooms include fireplaces and views of the Pacific ocean over the tops of Carmel pine trees with balconies to relax on.
Our room included a fireplace, queen-sized bed, balcony and the highly recommend “Monterey Wine & Cheese Pairing” option that included local wine and cheeses. It was a toss-up what we enjoyed the most, the fireplace or the balcony with its view, both captured an enjoyable amount of our time. The bathroom was spacious and included a large dressing area that doubled as a mini-kitchen with its refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave. Standard issue iron and ironing board came in handy with touching up the suitcase wrinkles. With a queen sized bed giving us plenty of room to spread out and rest, it was very nice to have a sitting chair and small dinette to move to as needed in our room.
Hofsas House Hotel offers several great packages to enhance your stay, including “Monterey Wine & Lula’s Chocolates”, the “Get Artsy Package” with its special room including wine and gourmet cheese on arrival, “Doggie Wagging Package” for your special four-legged companion, or perhaps you might enjoy the “Spa Package” that includes a visit to Cinq Mondes Spa Carmel. They also have partnerships with four different golf courses in the area, and you can pick up tickets for the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium in the lobby.
All rooms come with complimentary Continental Breakfast, available every morning from 8 to 10 am in the Lobby and includes “orange juice, French Roast coffee, tea, hot chocolate, a variety of fresh pastries delivered from a local bakery and fresh fruit.” It is a delightful treat to enjoy such a variety of delicacies in the morning while sitting on your balcony overlooking Carmel-by-the-Sea and the Pacific ocean.
In the Carmel-by-the-Sea dog-friendly tradition, Hofsas House Hotel has dog-friendly rooms available, making this a popular destination for dog lovers only eight blocks away from Carmel Beach.
Many of the rooms overlook one of the few year-round heated swimming pools in Carmel-by-the-Sea. After your swim, you can enjoy two European dry saunas, or sit around the pool and binge-watch your favorite shows with free wireless Internet access.

Brophy’s Tavern for lunch and dinner, with a great selection of beers, fantastic fish & chips, leaving no doubt why this is a local hangout.
5th Ave Deli & Catering for a box lunch to take to the beach. Lots of homemade specialties to tempt you, plus gift items and wines. Just incredible how much they have in this tiny space!
Grill on Ocean Ave for steak and seafood. A local favorite fine dining restaurant right on Ocean Ave with an extensive menu selection. Highly recommend trying the chef specialty of the night.
If your group is on the larger size, the Hofsas House Hotel has the only poolside meeting facility in Carmel-by-the-Sea, including a fireplace, full kitchen and the ability to seat up to 30 guests for dinner. If you are planning a family reunion, wedding reception or small business meeting Hofsas House Hotel’s European charm would be ideally suited for your event.
The staff is the friendliest I have ever experienced in a hotel, they enjoyed helping us check-in and offered some fun ideas for exploring Carmel-by-the-Sea, with a walk down to the beach high on our list for the next morning. Our weekend stay was short but bountifully rewarding, plenty of time to relax, explore, partake of the culinary delights in the area, and due to the quiet location of Hofsas House Hotel I found the time to take a short nap!
